CALL FOR VTAASF OFFICERS
After consecutive years of service, including the most recent six as president, Eric McClellan will be vacating the VTAASF president position for FY 2012-2013. Eric will be dedicating more time to the demands of new professional responsibilities and upcoming personal pursuits in the year ahead. As president, Eric feels that he has done all that he can to advance and grow the South Florida Chapter; has identified no better time than the present for organizational transition; and sees new ideas and opportunities that accompany new leadership as the only way to sustain and further grow our local chapter. Eric will continue to be an active participant in VTAASF events, and for the first time in a long time looks forward to enjoying the South Florida Chapter as a common local alum.
Therefore, new volunteers will be needed to continue building the South Florida Hokie Nation and lead VTAASF toward an exciting future. This is YOUR opportunity to affect the direction of VTAASF and bring lasting change to the South Florida Chapter present and future! All interested alumni should contact Eric at rericmc79@yahoo.com, or another VTAASF officer, no later than May 4. An annual chapter officers meeting will be conducted no later than June 3, 2012 to appoint officer positions, determine duties and assign responsibilities as well as to plan for VTAASF FY 2012-2013. The future and fate of VTAASF requires a team of dedicated officers, so volunteer today to serve the South Florida Hokie Nation!
2011 Football Season Halftime Scholarship Fundraiser Raffles
Thanks to the support and generosity of the South Florida Hokie Nation, proceeds totaling $2,005 to benefit the 2012 VTAASF Scholarship Award were collected from the halftime raffles conducted throughout the season. Combined with other recent scholarship fund raising efforts and those yet to come in the months ahead, FY2011-2012 will prove to be a RECORD BREAKING scholarship year for the South Florida Chapter! And that's NOT including President Steger's commitment to a 100% MATCH of each chapter's fund raising total this fiscal year! A BIG thanks to everyone that participated throughout the football season; congratulations to the 15 halftime raffle winners; and further congratulations to the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of an autographed custom VT football w/ protective acrylic case, Jerry Sweet of Oakland Park.

A Letter from Debbie Day, Director of Office of Recovery and Support, About Helping Children in Haiti
Dear Alumni,
I am attaching a letter from students in my Alumni Networking class. Some of you may be aware that I teach a course in the Residential Leadership Community. The class description is below if you are interested. The class is required to develop projects that involve alumni in some manner. One of the groups has decided to focus on helping educate children in Haiti. I have attached a letter to chapter presidents in case you would like to support their effort.
Course Description
Students will be introduced to the field of alumni relations and alumni volunteer leadership and their importance to the university community. Students will examine the history, mission and organizational structure of Virginia Tech and the Alumni Association and explore how and why alumni become invested in the university's missions of learning, discovery and engagement. They will learn about the importance of cultivating students and alumni to support and serve the university in a variety of significant leadership roles and be able to distinguish between the advancement functions of the university which include Alumni Relations, University Development and University Relations. Students will work in teams to design projects which require involvement with alumni and they will shadow an alum in a selected career.

Why Alumni Chapters?
After graduation from Virginia Tech, many alumni have a strong
desire to maintain strong ties with the university. Virginia
Tech recognizes its more than 190,000 alumni as one of the university's
most valued resources and encourages alumni participation in
shaping the institution's future. Alumni also enjoy opportunities
to share their affection and commitment to Virginia Tech with
others like themselves. Recognizing this need to enhance stronger
relationships between former students and the university at
a grass roots level, the Virginia Tech Alumni Association has
established an extensive network of local alumni chapters across
the country. These chapters strive to keep alumni informed about
Virginia Tech and other opportunities for graduates to join
together in support of the university.
Join Us!
Our chapter has more than 1,000 alumni in the South Florida
area. With gatherings and events in Miami-Dade, Broward and
Palm Beach counties, there's no excuse not to partake in the
fun. Reminisce about days at VT, cheer on the football team,
recruit new Hokies and do much more with the local Hokie crew!!
We have several events throughout the year, but our most popular
events are the football watching events in the fall. In addition
to our web page we also keep local alumni updated with regular
email updates. If you are not already on our e-mail list, send
an email to: rericmc79@yahoo.com
On behalf of all our officers, we look forward to seeing you
at our next event!
GO HOKIES!
