November 2009 - Fourth Annual Hokie Pokie Sock Drive
It's that time of year when Virginia Tech alumni pull together socks for the children of Southwest Mental Health Center - South Texas’ only nonprofit children’s hospital providing behavioral, emotional and mental health care to children ages 3-17 years old. Many of these children arrive at the hospital with no change of clothes, and a new pair of socks allows them towalk around the unit without their shoes. As simple as it sounds, our donated socks give them special comfort as they work through their treatment away from home. Last year, the San Antonio Hokies donated over 350 pairs of socks. The current economic condition has made the need just as great. It's easy! Just purchase white-only anklet socks (kids and teen favorites) and drop them off at any football game in November. Costco and Super Walmart always have great prices. Can't make a football game? Drop your socks off at Fox & Hound on your way home from work - they are great partners for us and will make sure we receive them. Make sure you identify yourself in your donation because you receive one raffle ticket for each pair. The prize will be dinner for 2 at a local restaurant. Help us put a smile on a child's face and help us to make this the biggest sock drive ever!
November 6, 2009 - 5:30pm - Dr. Barry Simmons
Dr. Barry W. Simmons Sr. from Virginia Tech is coming to San Antonio for a conference and we are getting together with him on Friday Nov. 6 at 5:30pm at the Lion and Rose at 410 and Blanco. Dr. Simmons is the Director of the Office of University Scholarships and Financial Aid at Virginia Tech. This will be a good opportunity for those who have kids who will be going to college soon to learn about the financial aid opportuniites at Virginia Tech as well as other schools. Take advantage of this opportunity and give Dr. Simmons a good Texas welcome. Lion and Rose Info
